The Brief
Sarah and Ben cook together most evenings, and the original kitchen — sealed off from the rest of the apartment, one person's width wide — turned that into a daily negotiation over counter space.
They didn't want a bigger kitchen so much as a kitchen that stopped being a chokepoint.
The Approach
We removed a non-structural wall, extended the island so two people can work either side of it, and rebuilt the cabinetry in white oak with a honed marble worktop that's meant to show its age well rather than stay pristine.
The island now does double duty as the breakfast table, so the small dining nook it replaced was folded back into the living room.
